OUR ACTIONS

Prison Conditions

Prisons are intended to be a place for reflection, accountability, and rehabilitation, but all too often they become places of abuse, neglect, and violence. The conditions within prisons can be dehumanizing, with overcrowded and unsanitary living spaces, inadequate healthcare, and a lack of access to education or job training.

For individuals who are incarcerated, the experience of being in prison can be traumatic and isolating, with limited opportunities for personal growth or rehabilitation. This is especially true for communities of color and low-income populations, who are disproportionately impacted by harsh sentencing laws and systemic inequalities within the criminal justice system.

Here at Policy, Inc., we are committed to confronting the conditions of confinement in jails and prisons, while prioritizing working in partnership with individuals and families who are impacted by incarceration. We believe that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and that the conditions within prisons must reflect these values.

We advocate for reforms that address the root causes of prison conditions, including systemic racism, poverty, and warehousing of those suffering from mental and emotional distress. We work to ensure that individuals who are incarcerated have access to high-quality healthcare, mental health services, and education and job training programs. We also support efforts to reduce the number of people who are incarcerated, through alternatives to incarceration and reforms to sentencing laws.

By addressing the conditions of confinement within jails and prisons, we can promote greater safety, dignity, and justice for all individuals who are impacted by the criminal justice system. Join us in our efforts to promote institutional change and create a more just and equitable society for all.
